I just went down to the Austin Convention Center to apply for FEMA aid and it was nothing short of a bureaucratic nightmare. No one knew where to send us, after having to walk several blocks to get a wristband to enter the shelter we were misdirected to the wrong side of the center then had to find our way to a very confusing group of lines in order to finally apply. Once I made it to the front of the line the city social workers who were filling out referrals were ordered to stop because FEMA wasn't ready yet. I waited a full hour and had an amazing conversation with a fellow evacuee named Ivan who lead his family out of Central City through neck deep water onto the I-10 and finally down to the convention center where he stayed for 3 days. People started getting really angry and agressive in line and Shanna and I decided to leave. We'll try to apply for FEMA aid when we get back to Covington. This whole post-Katrina situation, from the biggest things like, um forgetting to evacuate people to the smallest things like the disorganization I experienced today perfectly exemplifies the deep disorganization within our government.
