I haven't written anything about the Saints this season yet. It was a decision I made intentionally. In years past I have been guilty of pre-season over exhuberance. This year I needed to remain calm in order to really see what shape the new team would take.
I'm now going to come out and say it, I think we have the best New Orleans Saints squad in years. Coach Payton has really put together some spectacular talent on offense and our defense is much tougher than I expected. The fact that we came from behind a 13-0 deficit and snatched victory from a team that soundly whipped us last year speaks volumes about the character and talent of this team.
I'm not expecting that we'll make the playoffs or anything, I don't want to be too overly optimistic. But I'm very, very pleased with the start of the season.
One week from today we take on the Atlanta Falcons on Monday Night Football in the season home opener. It's also the first game in the Superdome since Katrina, the Saints and Falcons are both 2-0 and U2 will be performing at halftime. Does it really get any bigger than that? Yeah, it does, because it's also the New Orleans debut of Reggie Bush and Drew Brees.
This is probably the biggest game in Saints history and I'll be there with my homeboys. Excited doesn't even begin to describe how I feel. It's more like the fear and excitement that a pilgrim probably feels in anticipation of an intense religious experience. It's like coming home.
I know last year I tried to break up with them, but this year the Saints have renewed my Faith and my Love. That's right, I've said it before and I'll say it again, I LOVE THE SAINTS!

The NYTimes is running a great John Coltrane primer in anticipation of an upcoming retrospective at Lincoln Center. This is timely for me, as I've begun to heavily listen to Coltrane again recently. His work is my favorite of all the great Jazz composers.
Today marks the end of the Summer of 2006. Here's what I've been reading, watching, listening to, doing and consuming for the past 3 months:
