Hugh Macleod, the author of Gaping Void has written a great long list of tips on the cultivation and execution of creativity titled simply "How to be creative". The list has some really great tips including number 7, "Don't quit your dayjob" with a subarticle atteched to it called "The Sex & Cash theory". This theory basically posits that by maintaining a "straight" job you are more empowered to do really experimental work that you won't get paid for. I've long held that idea as well. The only flip side to the argument is that sometimes you are too exhausted from your dayjob to find time to do more personal, experimental work. It's a fine balance that's sometimes hard to find.
