For all the concern about how controlled and managed last night was going to be it turned out to be a pretty good debate after all. John Kerry came out and consistently provided answers about his policy and also delivered tough questions to Mr. Bush. To which Mr. Bush had little to no answer. He looked tired, frustrated and could barely get up the muster to spout the tired memes that his campaign strategy is built upon. Cheesy phrases just don't work in a forum where people expect candidates to sincerely discuss the issues for 2 minutes at a time.
Kerry beat Bush on his own turf and decidedly so. Here are some of the important statements I think he made:
1. On the difference between what his policy for winning the peace in Iraq will be and what Bush's policy is: "So the choice for America is, you can have a plan that I've laid out in four points, each of which I can tell you more about or you can go to johnkerry.com and see more of it. Or you have the president's plan, which is four words: More of the same."
The four points that he mentions are as follows: Internationalize, because others must share the burden; Train Iraqis, because they must be responsible for their own security; Move forward with reconstruction because that's an important way to stop the spread of terror; and Help Iraqis achieve a viable government, because it is up to them to run their own country.
2. On the path to the Iraq War: Bush has not been candid with Americans. He misled us on planning. Misled us on going to war as a last resort. Turned down help from United Nations. Chose the wrong way to disarm Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. "I've had one position, one consistent position, that Saddam Hussein was a threat."
I think this effectively kills the flip-flop meme.
3. On Preemptive War: "Saddam Hussein didn't attack us. Osama bin Laden attacked us. Al Qaeda attacked us. And when we had Osama bin Laden cornered in the mountains of Tora Bora (Afghanistan), 1,000 of his cohorts with him in those mountains. With the American military forces nearby and in the field, we didn't use the best-trained troops in the world to go kill the world's No. 1 criminal and terrorist." and "He also said Saddam Hussein would have been stronger. That is just factually incorrect. Two-thirds of the country was a no-fly zone when we started this war. We would have had sanctions. We would have had the U.N. inspectors. Saddam Hussein would have been continually weakening."
That's what a lot of us have been saying all along.
4. On missing the target by shifting focus onto Iraq away from Al Qaeda: "Iraq was not even close to the center of the war on terror before the president invaded it."
And we all know now what it has become, a rat's nest of terrorist training and guerilla war.
In adressing these issues sincerely and offering a clear and insightful difference between the two plans I think Kerry has shown the country that he has a viable alternative to Bush's go it alone Mad Cowboyism. I just hope that everyone was listening because we can't afford another four years with Bush as our president.
