Design Eye for the Idea Guy was one of the panels that I was most anticipating at SXSW Interactive this year. Basically a Fab Five of design (Cameron Moll, Ryan Sims, Keith Robinson, Andrei Herasimchuk, and Paul Nixon) take a website that is high on concept and low on design and totally redesign it. Last year they did it to useit.com, home of Jakob Nielsen, usability "expert" and perceived foe of all things design.
This year's panel did not disappoint. The guys chose Dirk Knemeyer, a popular user experience design expert whose website is chocked full of great content but leaves much to be desired in the design department. As an added twist Dirk was present, which led to lots of funny moments. Basically each guy took a different portion of the design process, IA, Logo design, Color, Type, Photography and then combined them all into a really stunning website. Here's the finished product.
The thing I liked most about this is the idea that with a little innovative thinking and some dilligent work anyone can have a really beautiful and accessible website.
They really did improve the look of his site!
