I can't run the quitmeter with a good conscience because I still sometimes smoke socially. I'm working on it though. I'm meeting friends for drinks on Wednesday and I'm going to really try not to smoke.
usually, i sit down and open up a tab, paying when i left.
when i quit, i payed for each drink with cash.
the thing was, at any given moment, i was liable to freak out and have a nic-fit.
when that inevitably happened, i pop some chewing gum, get a to-go cup if necessary, and walk down the street to the next bar (say, molly's --> dervish )
get a drink. freak out. walk to tiki's.
freak out. walk to molly's.
rinse repeat.
the getting out, removing myself from the situation, chewing some gum and walking around in the relatively fresh air worked quite well.
i guess if you want to stay at one bar, then take a walk around the block.
that was how i managed to stay out, have drinks, and not smoke.
it gets easier. you just have to train yourself.
get out of the habit of smoking.
an old friend of mine, when he quit, his methods were a bit different.
if he was at home / a friends house / non-nasty place, he'd drop and do some push-ups.
if we were out, and he mentioned smoking or cigarettes, we punched him.
if he got a craving and was on his way to caving, he'd ask and we'd punch him.
all in the arm, of course.
anyways, yeah. diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks.
Thanks for the encouragement! I'm ready to take th e last step and quit for good. When I go out this weekend I'm going to try some, any, all of these techniques to get the job done.
I think running around the block, whatever block I'm on at the time, might do the trick.

I failed miserably and smoked 3 ciggies last night. I wonder if I'll ever be able to drink and not smoke.
