I had a great weekend of sports watching, which was kicked off by a breakfast I hosted for the Tour de France prologue. Sonny, Will and Tim came over to the house and we watched the shortest Time Trial of the Tour over bacon, eggs and toast.
After all of the hubub surrounding this year's Tour de France, I was nervous about how much I could enjoy the race. All of those fears were quelled this weekend by George Hincapie's donning of the Maillot Jeune and Thor Hushovd's stellar Time Trial effort. It was really nice to see George in yellow yesterday and I sincerely hope he has it on his back on the last day of the Tour in Paris.
After the race Tim left and Rick, Sarah and Rose joined us to watch England take on Portugal. I'm not the biggest England fan in the world but after the Netherlands game I absolutely detest the Portugese for their cry-baby antics. This team is right up there with Italy on the whine-o-meter. Also, Sarah is a dual citizen of the States and the U.K. so we all cheered for England in solidarity. It all ended in heartbreak of course, as the cry babies defeated the limeys 3-1 in penalty kicks.
The finest moment of the weekend came in the form of France's 1-0 defeat of Brazil. They played with such heart and finesse and completely manhandled the over-hyped Brazilians. I'd really like to see France and Germany in the final. Les Bleus deserve another World Cup victory and it will be the perfect exit for Zinedine Zidane, one of the greatest of all time. And if either of those crybaby teams makes it, I know who I'll be pulling against.
